Seal and Her Pup (photos)

(I've been told it's best to use Internet Explorer to see this site. If the pictures are overlaying the text, are you using Netscape?)

This seal was most likely born the night before this photo was taken (the computers in McMurdo are taking an exceptionally long download time (10 minutes per photo), so just one photo for now).

There is a group doing a project on Wedell Seals and the snow mobile tracks they left behind to tag this little guy were still on the Ice. Then again, so was all the blood.

A Few Photos

antarctic sunset.jpg

There's a fine line between going out and getting a taste of Antarctica and finding time to write about what I'm doing. So here are some photos and hopefully I'll let you know the rest of the story.

The Divers usually begin their dive in a dive hut. This is their first dive this year where they walked out to a hole and jumped in. While they suited up, I chopped, cut and scooped away four inches of ice. A tractor had drilled the 8ft hole through the ice the day before, it took one night for the 4 inches to refreeze.

They caught a bunch of fish and this starfish (and, for those wondering, I'm still a dork, even in Antarctica).

While the divers were underwater, I was alone, no one to keep me company. Until this little guy popped his head through the hole. He'd then dive under and bark, whistle and moan. Since there wasn't another living creature within 10 miles of me, it sounded like I was walking on top of a speaker and my feet trembled with the sounds of a seal, under the ice.

Let me know if you hear it.
